Afghanistan: The Miserable Performance Of the Mainstream Media

As far as down here, no local coverage (with the exception of Carlos Alvarez in the very beginning covering the withdrawal & coverage of AMLO offering assistance to the refugees) of this crisis...but then, I remember years ago asking people down in Ensenada why Mexico was not involved in WWII (actually, our neighbor Van Rostrum down there had trained Mexican pilots although I don't think  they participated in flights over Europe or the Pacific) ...and the answer I always got was: "Because it did not involve us" or "It had nothing to do with us." Which gave me pause, but I think the world has changed since then. Everything sooner or later affects all of us.

To date, it seems like a much lower number than the previous months, but we are at  128 executions in TIJ this month bringing the YTD total in TIJ to 1,340.

"The first four women and one man, from Afghanistan, arrived at the Mexico City International Airport (AICM), where they were received by Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón, head of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE).

“We are honored to be here, to be safe. We thank the Government of Mexico for saving our lives. From now on we hope to have more opportunities and greater achievements for our future. Once again we are grateful that Allah has given us the power to be here, that he has saved our lives, ”said one of the women.

“You not only saved our lives, but also our dreams, those dreams that we seek to make come true. We are grateful to God that we are still alive and that our story will not end in a sad way for the Taliban, "said another of the four young refugees at a press conference.

The women who are part of the Afghanistan Robotics team shared details of the moments of uncertainty they experienced before taking a plane to Mexico, assuring that their lives were at risk after the Taliban seized power.

“At the time when the Taliban forces took power, many people still believed that engineering and robotics were a matter for children, but we have proven them wrong […] Now that the Taliban are in power, in our country these things are no longer in our favor, in this regime we girls find ourselves in a lot of difficulties, however now we have the honor of being here ”, said a young woman named Qaderyan.

“We are very happy and happy to receive you here today. Mexico has a long tradition in favor of refuge. We may be very distant from what happens in Afghanistan, but the human cause, the protection of values and the causes that identify us as Mexicans and Mexican women have made us commit ourselves so that they are in Mexico ”, he said, in your turn, Ebrard Casaubón.

“They will be received with great affection by the people of Mexico. It seemed very important to us to open our house to them, the President of the Republic asked us to be here to receive them and give them this message. In Mexico we say 'this is your home' and now we want to tell you with all our heart, you are at home. Mexico honors its tradition and the future we want to have. Welcome, and count on us ”, the foreign minister concluded.

For her part, Martha Delgado Peralta, head of the Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights of the SRE, who has offered Afghan women accommodation and health services, as well as international protection in Mexico.

"We have carried out various diplomatic and consular procedures in order to be able to have a safe passage for women and bring them to Mexico," said the federal official, who assured that the women were transferred to Mexico with funds from different organizations and will be able to adopt a visa humanitarian up to 180 days with the option of an extension.

The six people left Afghanistan on August 23, for Qatar, which is represented by the Government of Mexico, so that after crossing through more than five countries they could reach Mexican territory on a commercial flight.

At the moment, the legal figure with which they will be in Mexico is not defined, since they will decide if they ask for refuge, but in the meantime, a non-governmental organization will offer them accommodation and food at no cost. The Afghan women's robotics team has won different competitions worldwide and created a respirator with recycled parts to care for patients with COVID-19.
