"The "Lorica" ( or in Latin,"Breastplate") is an ancient Celtic prayer attributed to Saint Patrick. Part of the Benedictus or song of Zachary from Luke 1:68-79 it is a morning prayer for the day when God's compassion like the dawn from on high shall break upon us, to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, and to guide our feet into the way of peace."
Primarily, the Lorica is a protection prayer, "...in which the petioner invokes all the power of God as a safeguard against evil in its many forms."
This version comes from the Benedictine Prince of Peace Abbey in Oceanside:
I arise today
through the strength of heaven,
light of the sun,
radiance of the moon,
splendor of fire,
speed of lightning,
swiftness of the wind,
depth of the sea,
stability of the earth,
firmness of the rock.
I arise today
through God's strength to pilot me,
God's might to uphold me,
God's wisdom to guide me,
God's eye to look before me,
God's ear to hear me,
God's word to speak for me,
God's hand to guard me,
God's way to lie before me,
God's shield to protect me,
God's hosts to save me
from the snares of the devil,
from everyone who desires me ill,
afar and near,
alone or in a multitude.
Christ in the heart
of every man who thinks of me,
Christ in the mouth
of every man who speaks to me,
Christ in the eye
of every man that sees me,
Christ in the ear
of every man that hears me.
Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,
Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me.
amen.
